<image:caption>Completed in 1992, the luxury 5-star resort hotel at Jimbaran Bay, Bali comprises 147 suite and villa rooms, restaurants, spa and conference facilities. At the time of its completion the hotel set a new standard for luxury villa style resort hotels in Bali and throughout the world. The resort pioneered two key elements; it was the first large scale individual villa hotel ever created, and the first to incorporate a dip pool in every villa. The iconic resort has been the recipient of numerous international awards since its completion, including being listed as the number one resort on the Condé Nast Traveler Top 100 List 1999, and appearing on the Condé Nast Traveler Gold list from 2005 - 2011 consecutively.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Grand Nikko Bali (FInished 2014) - GRAND NIKKO BALI</image:title>
<image:caption>The existing Nikko resort in Nusa Dua required a 500 person capacity multi function facility with a wedding pavilion, and 18 associated stand alone villas with their own central Club Lounge building. The 2.3 hectare site separate from the original hotel, afforded GKAI the opportunity to produce an architecture different in its aesthetics to the original building. The 44 meter x 24 meter multi function facility is dividable into three separate spaces, each with their own unique raking ceiling spaces, reflective of typical Balinese roof form. There was an existing small dry drainage channel running through the villa site that GKAI elected to enhance into a landscape water feature, and use as the central focus for the 18 individual villas that surround it. The access buggy path to the villas runs on either side of this flowing central rive with the Villa Club Lounge building as the termination point for the river.</image:caption>

<image:title>Novotel Bali Nusa Dua (Finished 2007) - NOVOTEL BALI NUSA DUA</image:title>
<image:caption>This project, completed in 2007, was one of the first condominium style resorts in Bali. One, two and three bedroom apartments were sold to individual buyers and then leased back to Novotel to operate as a resort. The room blocks are reserved and operated as the Accor Vacation Club. Each apartment style room is designed to have views of either the spectacular tropical gardens and pool lagoon, designed by Wijaya Landscape, or the Nusa Dua Golf Course, plus six penthouse suites which all have expansive ocean views. Influenced by classic Balinese architectural style, public guest facilities are designed as a series of open pavilions, including the lobby, restaurant, spa, gym and kids club.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ethereal and awe-inspiring, the wedding chapel at Tirtha Uluwatu, which was completed in 2003, is perched on top of a cliff offering panoramic views of the Indian Ocean. Taking influence from its name 'Tirtha' which is Balinese for holy water, the chapel is designed so that the structure is surrounded on all sides by water. These shallow pools along with low overhanging trees connected to the chapel, cast magical reflections at sunset. Made from tension membrane and steel, the diaphanous modern chapel juxtaposes a traditional bale, used for outdoor dining.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Holding the key to GKAI facts and figures, our Accountant Irna controls the purse strings of the company, which means everyone is nice to her. Originally from the stunning island of Flores, Irna graduated from STIESIA Surabaya before working at PT. Bahtera Mandiri Artakelola in Jakarta for a number of years. In between her role at GKAI and taking care of her gorgeous little girl at home, Irna's time is pretty stretched, but she does tell us that once upon a time she enjoyed travelling.   </image:caption>

The property features indigenous materials and finishes including Javanese fabrics, palimanan stone, bamboo and brass. The site was a challenge due to the site being 30 meters wide and 228 meters long, with the busy street as its frontage and tranquil rice fields either side of its long sides . GKAI designed the architecture and interiors for a total of 70 x 45m2 rooms, which stretch down the site from the restaurant and lobby that front Jalan Hanoman. Each room has an uninterrupted view of the emerald green rice fields adjacent on the North side. The architecture for the street frontage lobby and restaurant, and Dala Spa at the rear end of the property are by GKAI with interiors for the restaurant and spa by Zohra Boukhari. The room facades of the hotel make extensive use of bamboo. Local to Bali and Indonesia materials are used exclusively in the construction. GKAI were commissioned to demolish the existing hotel, keeping only the existing swimming pool, and design a sister hotel to the already completed Alaya, not far away in Jalan Hanoman. The architecture and feel of the Alaya Jembawan, turned out to feel like a true Ubud Hotel, taking advantage of its steep site, for every room to look out on the tropical bamboo vegetation that follows the river valley at the back of the site… Staying at the Alaya Jembawan is unmistakably an Ubud Bali experience.</image:caption>

<image:caption>An unusual project for GKAI in that the site is located on the area known as the Bukit ( the southern tip of Bali) and was land locked with no views to anything other than not too much development surrounding the site. It remains in an area that is waiting for future development to catch up with it, and is perhaps well before its time, in that it is a car, taxi or bus ride from the development to get to any shopping, restaurants or beaches. The project consisted of 100+ one and two bedroom apartments in two blocks, with Restaurant , pool and function facilities and stand alone Spa. Then 100+ one, two, three and four bedroom villas … All the apartments and villas were to be sold and then managed for the owners as a 200+ room resort. GKAI produced a good master plan, and a consistent architectural aesthetic to the buildings, that holds together as a pleasing development to look at and experience within the confines of its isolated location.</image:caption>

<image:title>Alantara Resort Hotel – Sanur Bali (FInished 2017) - ALANTARA RESORT HOTEL – Sanur Bali</image:title>
<image:caption>The Alantara project is 40 rooms with 4 stand alone villas as a “Boutique” destination resort, it was finished at the end of 2017. It sits within an inward looking site, in amongst predominantly single residential villas, on the “wrong side” of the Bypass highway in Sanur …. The design brief from the Client was to create a traditional (almost heritage) style of destination resort, that once the guests are inside the resort, they feel like they are in a Bali Village . The GKAI planning solution was to place the rooms, Restaurant and Bar, around a central swimming pool courtyard. To create the “Old Bali” feel to the buildings, GKAI used embossed terracotta wall tiles for the walls of all the buildings that surround the central courtyard. Despite Mt Agung erupting just after opening day, with tourist numbers dropping as a consequence, Alantara has achieved good occupancy, and the guest comments confirm that the hotel feels like staying in “Old Bali” !</image:caption>

<image:title>Alaya Kuta (Finished 2015) - ALAYA KUTA (Now Amnaya Kuta)</image:title>
<image:caption>This Hotel situated in what can be described as the Hub of Kuta (next to the famous “Water Bom Park”) was originally going to be a 240 room hotel with 24m2 rooms, the Alaya hotel brand (Michele and Jimmy Gunawan) was asked to take on the project operation, when the footings were already 75% constructed. Alaya asked GKAI to redesign the hotel into 120 rooms with a totally different architectural character to the original 240 room design ….. It was an interesting challenge, that we took on in collaboration with landscape architect Made Wijaya, as we had done with the original Alaya hotel in Ubud. The powerful and fun architectural expression that resulted, has been not just a visual success, but also a commercial success, with constant high guest occupancy and approval.</image:caption>

<image:title>Villa Tanjung - Lembongan Island Bali (Finished 2015) - VILLA TANJUNG - Lembongan Island Bali</image:title>
<image:caption>As the photos of this private villa project show, it is a most spectacular location on a headland point, that gives the 5 bedroom villa 270 degree views. The structure of the living pavilion is laminated bamboo portal frames, which were a “first” for the bamboo flooring manufacturer, who had to adapt his floor board manufacturing machinery, to clamp and glue the shredded bamboo into curved bamboo beams 100mm thick. The 5 alang -alang roofed pavilions curve their way around the site giving all the bedrooms, bathrooms and living rooms uninterrupted views of the aqua blue ocean that surrounds Lembongan island.</image:caption>

<image:title>Puri Temple Hill / Opia Restaurant (Finished 2016) - PURI TEMPLE HILL / OPIA RESTAURANT</image:title>
<image:caption>Opened in 2017 this project is situated on the cliff edge of a now unused stone quarry in Jimbaran Bali, it is a spectacular site that not only looks into the interesting old quarry but also looks down on the crescent shaped Jimbaran beach ( Panti Jimbaran) and then beyond to Benoa harbour and Mount Agung. It was a special project for GKAI as it is also situated next to the Four Seasons Resort, our first project in Bali, finished 25 years before in 1992. Puri Temple Hill is the Wedding Chapel complex, and Opia is the reception and stand alone restaurant … We are very pleased with the way the spiral roofed wedding chapel sits as a gorgeous and perfectly sized landmark on top of the quarry.</image:caption>
